Dear Fellow PHPDetroit Member,
PHPDetroit is back after a few months off. Yes, it's been a while since the last meeting (July), so we should a lot of catching up to do. The next meetup is tentatively planned for December 12th, but we need your help to decide where. I've started a poll here: http://www.meetup.com... For those of you that are new to the group, WELCOME! Each meeting we've had in past has been full of information for both the new PHP programmer to the seasoned code walkers. Here's some topics we've talked about in past: PHP Certification Working with Clients - Outsourcing VS. Working with you - How do you overcome this. - Typical Experiences - The actual costs of low cost labor - Language barrier Use of Frameworks (recurring topic) Development Environments Using PHP beyond the web environment PHP Logging of errors - Log4PHP - Trap errors to a log instead of to the screen. - Improve end user experience - http://logging.apache... Using Splunk to analyze logs from log4php, MySQL, Apache, system logs all in a single view - Associate events in views to see what failed, or what triggered failures - Virtually merges multiple log sources - http://www.splunk.com... Memory Profiling in PHP What will we talk about next? Good question! We have a number of ideas but would rather hear what you, the PHPer, want to talk about. Tell us what you want here! |

Being somewhat new to PHP I would like information on just about anything. But these would be at the top of the list.
Use of Frameworks (recurring topic) Development Environments Using PHP beyond the web environment And any thaughts on CMS's like Drupal or Joomla |

What I got:
- 4 years of experience in PHP and a background in education - vBulletin, Wordpress, Wordpress MU design & dev - PDFlib, image generation What I need: - Git (If someone can show me how to work out of a group's GitHub repository, it would make my year. I'm completely stumped and have lost days to this.) - Advanced MySQL, especially for scaling larger sites What's interesting to me: - Open source: projects you contribute to, projects you use frequently - Advanced security practices - Online community building (it's primarily why I use PHP) - Growing popularity of PHP (Tiobe survey) Edited by Matt Lincoln Russell on Nov 19, 2009 7:39 PM |

Also, you're 3 for 3 now in picking weekends that I have an event scheduled for my website! :p I can probably slip away from this one since it's smaller, but wow weird coincidences. We only get together every other month or so and people fly in for them typically so it's kinda tacky for one of the hosts to disappear for a few hours, heh.

I would like to spend some time discussing PHP & XML. SimpleXML, DOM, XPath/XQuery and web services. On the same token, I would really like to talk about using JSON with AJAX.

Unfortunately I'm already booked for the morning of the 12th, unless it's before 9:00AM or after 1:00PM.
Have we committed to a time yet? Eric Hill Edited by Eric Hill on Nov 20, 2009 11:14 AM |

I finally figured out Git and am running wild on GitHub now. What's surprising to me is how under-represented PHP is on there; I mean there are more Perl projects than PHP on there for goodness' sake. Where are all the PHP projects at? Is it because all the good PHP projects predate GitHub or what?
